Footballers off to a winning start
Passage West footballers got their league campaigns off to a winning start with both the A and B sides recording victories on Sunday morning. These were great results considering both sides were making a return to a higher grade. These wins come on the back of another win during the week when Passage defeated Muskerry side Cloughduv in a challenge game.

Junior A Football League

Passage West 2-7

Bishopstown 0-5

This game was played in Bishopstown on Sunday morning, 10 February 2008. Conditions were good, the field needed to be cut in patches but otherwise in good condition.

Passage played against the hill and slight wind in the first half and seemed a little nervous in their return to the A grade. Bishopstown settled much more quickly and were first to score a point. This score seemed to awaken Passage from their slumber and they took over in midfield with Cian McCarthy and Alan Keane lording it over their much taller opponents and Passage forwards had a constant supply of ball.

John O'Byrne opened the scoring for Passage with a point that was soon followed by another from Seamus Forde. Bishopstown made a rare incursion into Passage territory and scored a point to gave a wrong slant to the score as Passage were much on top, however in the next attack Passage scored a goal through John O'Byrne and after this never looked back.

A point from a Cian McCarthy free and another from Seamus Forde gave Passage a 1-4 to 0-3 half time lead. With words from coach Tomas Farrell ringing in their ears Passage began the second half in blistering fashion and scored two points in quick succession from Seamus Forde and John O'Byrne.

Passage then set about playing a brand of football which we have not seen for a while from a Passage team and in a passing movement started by Daniel Howard on his own half back line Passage moved the ball up field and James O'Connor with a deft flick over his marker's head in to the on rushing Seamus Forde who billowed the roof of the net for a second goal and thus gave Passage the cushion they needed.

Seamus Forde then kicked a beauty of a point from 40 yards to give Passage a lead of 10 points and with only a few minutes remaining Bishopstown scored two points from frees. James O'Connor then finished the scoring for Passage with a point.

Thus ended Passage's first game on their return to A grade football with a well deserved victory. Passage were well served by James Kelly, Paddy Maher in the back line Alan Keane and Cian McCarthy controlled mid field while John O'Byrne and Seamus Forde were the pick of the forwards.

Junior B Football League

Passage West 0-6

Lough Rovers 0-3

After winning the championship last year the Passage B footballers were anxious to get their league campaign off to a winning start, which they did on Sunday morning against Lough Rovers.

In a low scoring game, Passage were unlucky to have what seemed like a perfectly good first half goal ruled out for a square ball.

Despite this setback the side played well to keep ahead and showed good discipline during some scrappy periods of play. The best of the football was played with the first half and great play on the wings from Billy Cotter and Dave O'Connell gave a lot of options for the forwards. Midway through the first half Billy Cotter sent a high ball from the left wing into the goal area and an in rushing Michael Costin out fielded the Lough Rovers keeper to fist the ball into the net. However to the surprise of both the Passage and Lough Rovers players the goal was ruled out with the referee judging the player to be standing in the square when the ball was kicked.

Despite the setback Passage carried on and took a five points to two lead going into half time. The word from coach Keith Maxwell at half time was to keep our discipline and not to give away any frees, especially close to goal.

In the second half Lough Rovers tried their best to reduce the deficit but good play by the Passage backs and the fact that they had a man sent off for a second yellow card meant they could only reduce the deficit to two pints and Passage eventually got one back.

For the final three minutes Lough Rovers were awarded three 45s in a row, as they tried to score an equalising goal but once the ball was cleared, the final whistle was sounded.

Scorers for Passage were Pa Coakley with three points (two from frees) and Dave O'Connell with three from play.
