Junior B side in Seandun Cup Final

WELL done to the B footballers who defeated Na Piarsaigh in the Seandun Cup semi final on Sunday morning.
The wet conditions didn't help the quality of football but both sides were eager to win this game. Early in the second half Passage found themselves two goals up and were looking comfortable however a quick goal and a point from Na Piarsaigh and the game suddenly became a real contest with play moving from end to end.
Goals from Podge O'Leary and James Kind and a man of the match performance by Francis McEveney helped Passage to their second final this year.
Following their win over Rathpeacon in the Championship they will be hoping to add the Seandun Cup to the trophy case.

Then on Monday evening the B hurlers followed suit and got their championship off to a winning start recording an easy victory over Ballinure. Well done to both sides and lets make sure the whole club gets out to support the sides as they progress further in the championship.
The hurlers winning starts are added to those already made by the footballers. All adult sides are unbeaten so far this year in championship, both football and hurling. The footballers will be taking a break for a couple of weeks and it looks like the B Hurlers will play their next game at the weekend so make sure to support them.

Junior C Football Championship
Passage West 2-11
Fr O'Callaghans 1-3

THE Passage West B footballers got their championship campaign off to a great start with a good win over Fr O'Callaghans in Passage last Wednesday.
The game had been put back following the death of Con Murphy and a minutes silence was held before the re-arranged fixture.
Passage got off to an excellent first half scoring four unanswered points followed by a goal. Tight marking by the backs and some great play at midfield against the wind allowed the forwards to pick off a number of good scores.
Great fielding by Daniel 'Podge' O'Leary and some good running by Pa Coakley, who notched up a great goal along with three points, meant Passage stayed in possession and on top of the game. With the wind at their backs in the second half Passage were mistaken if they thought they would have it easy and to their credit Fr O'Callaghans game back at them and with a goal and a point and all of a sudden Passage's victory looked far from certain.
Just when it was needed most a goal gave Passage some breathing space. A 45 from Gavin O'Flaherty caused havoc in the Fr O'Callaghan's square and a final touch from Podge sent it into the net. The goal added to Podge's three other points.
While the second half football may not of had the excitement, impressive performances all over the pitch allowed forwards Franny O'Rouke to score three further points and corner forward Keith Fitzpatrick to score two more, both off his left foot. Bainisteoir Thomas Farrell made a number of substitutions bringing on six subs, all of whom made their mark.
Passage West: James Kind, Alan Healy, Niall Harrington, John O'Mahony, Rory Ahearn, Gavin O'Flaherty, John Cotter, Michael Harrington, Daniel O'Leary, David O'Connell, Kevin O'Rourke, Pa Coakley, Keith Fitzpatrick, Michael Costin.

Bishopstown 2-05

Well done to the footballers who got their championship campaign off to a winning start with a win over Bishopstown at Ballinlough. Their victory by a single point means that they now move on from the quarter final stage and they are sure to improve in the next round. The sad death of Con Murphy meant the postponement of the second's side championship opener against Fr O'Callaghans. That game has now been fixed for Wednesday 9th May. Best of luck to both sides in their next games.

Training is also going well for the Junior hurlers. The A side who face Blackrock in the championship are sitting on top of the league table with a 100% record. The B team who face Ballinure in the championship also head into that game on the back of a good run of form in the league. All sides are playing well and winning games so lets hope the form continues.

Passage 1-0

Bishopstown 0-0

U14 girls played their first league game on Friday. This was a well matched contest with both side having several scoring chances. Captain Niamh Cahill was inspirational at centre back alongside Katie O’Neill and Aine Healy. This half back line defended superbly. Nikki Twomey played well at full back and goalkeeper Katelyn Murphy kept a clean sheet for Passage. The forwards worked hard and were rewarded when newcomer Kirsten Crawford scored a super goal. Shannon Twomey’s introduction in the second half caused problems for the Bishopstown defence. Megan Farr had a super game as did Melissa Dineen and Rachel O’Connor. This was a great start for this team and look forward to meeting Eire Og next week.

Captain Holly
THE A football team had a great challenge game against North Kerry side Listowel Emmets on Sunday evening. The team building exercise was a great success and the side took the opportunity to select their team captain before they head into the first round of Championship this weekend. The players made a split vote between Diarmuid Holly and Conor Quigley so both players made a quick speech to garner support. However only one can take the title and regardless of the final selection method, all players agree that Diarmuid Holly will lead the side to great success on the field.
A note of thanks must also go to the Listowel Emmets club who looked after the lads and gave them a great game of competitive football.

Passage 3-3 Ballincollig 2-4

U16 girls secured a championship semi final position defeating Ballincollig
in a very exciting game on Wednesday evening. Over the last two years games
against Ballincollig have always been close and this one was no exception.
Passage started well with Karen Twomey causing problems for the Ballincollig
defence. Karen scored two goals in the opening minutes and Passage looked
comfortable. This was short lived as Ballincollig were back on level terms
and ahead by one point at half time. The second half was a tough battle with
many wasted scoring chances for Passage. Karen Twomey scored another goal
putting just two points between the sides. Drama was soon to follow with
Ballincollig awarded a penalty on 60 minutes. Kate Boland in goal made a
super save to secure victory for Passage.

Erin Twomey, Emma Lydon, Laura McCarthy, Gillian Foley & Gemma Cooney were
excellent in defence. Karen Twomey scoring 3-1 on the night was the
difference between the sides.

THREE Passage West GAA players are up for selection to represent Cork at
Inter County level.
Shane Howard is on the panel for the Cork Minor team while Eoin O'Brien is
in the final shake up for the Cork Junior side. Congratulations should also
go to Sinead O'Reilly on her selection for the Cork U16 squad. Well done to
all three players who would all be a great asset to any team.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE 2

Passage West 2-12
Douglas 1-8

THE A footballers kept up their unbeaten run with a great win over southside
rivals Douglas. Their game on Saturday night leaves them top of the table
and on a high heading towards championship.
Against Douglas Paul Holly and David Horan stood out while new arrival Paddy
Maher also made an impression. Midfielder Alan Keane also put in another
great performance before heading back for college.
The A team faces a number of matches in the run up to the first round of the
championship and need the clubs' support for every game.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE 3

Passage West 1-9
St Michael's 3-4

THE B footballers had a very busy week in their run up to championship. They
played three matches in just four days and while the team collected a number
of injuries, two wins put them on top of the league.
Spectators at the clubhouse on Wednesday evening were treated to a riveting
game of football as Passage went down by a single point to St Michael's.
Despite outscoring their opponents it was the leaked goals at the back that
cost them. Passage fought hard in the second half to overcome the deficit
and tried hard in the final few minutes to get an equaliser but
unfortunately the clock ran out and the side recorded their first loss of
the season.

Passage West 0-12
Na Piarsaigh 0-5
ON FRIDAY evening things were much improved and the forwards began to find
their range, scoring 12 points. There was very little in the game at half
time but a strong push after the break saw Passage un away with the game and
won comfortable on a seven point margin.

Passage West 0-19
St Nicholas 4-6

SUNDAY morning's game left the side with many highs and lows. A number of
injuries shortened the side's selection and yet the team recorded an
excellent win.
Credit is due to the forwards who notched up a brilliant 18 points from
play. Despite this a number of goals were conceded at the back which will
have to I be improved before Thursday's game against Delaneys.

U12 Camogie

Passage 0-0
Bishopstown 3-0

PASSAGE young U12 side had their first competitive league game on Monday 9th
in Passage. This very young side trained by Kieran Harrington and Mick
Dunlea and they are a promising side for Passage. Most of the team are under
10 years and this was an outstanding display. Ria & Ellen O'Mahony were
excellent for Passage. Shannon Twomey played well and Emma Harrington just 9
years old was superb at centre back. Player of the game for Passage had to
be goalkeeper Erin McAvenny who was superb between the posts. Forwards
Danielle Mehigan, Maeve & Roisin Dunlea and Alison Gleeson played very well.
Team: E. McAvenny, E. Keogh, K, McAvenny, L. Gleeson, G. Quirke, E.

Passage 4-0
Ballincollig 0-1

THE U14 girls first league game went well on Sunday 15th. Tia McMahon &
Niamh Murphy were dominant at midfield and setup the hardworking forwards
for some fine early goals.
Aine Healy was first to find the net and followed soon after with another
well taken goal. Tia McMahon's long range shot confused to goalkeeper and
Rebecca Farr added another goal before half time. Ballincollig defended well
in the second half and held the Passage girls scoreless. The first half
goals were enough to secure the points for Passage. Amy Corkery, Niamh
Cahill & Megan Farr played very well for Passage.
Team: S. Twomey, R. O'Connor, Nikki Twomey, K. O'Neill, M. Farr, N. Cahill,
A. Corkery, N.Murphy, T. McMahon,L. Corcoran, R. Farr, A. Healy, S. Cashman,

U16B League

Valley Rovers 2-6
Passage        2-5

ANOTHER exciting U16 League game on Saturday 14th at Innishannon. Passage
opened with a point from Sinead O'Reilly. It was a tough encounter for all
this half with Valley Rovers swift forwards very accurate in front of the
posts. Natasha O'Sullivan & Amy Costello scored two great points from play
opening up a lead for Passage. Just before the break Valley Rovers scored a
goal leaving Passage trailing by one point.
The second half looked very promising with Natasha tormenting the Valley's
defence and scored two quick goals. Valley Rovers true to their tradition
mounted a strong challenge and scored some fine points followed by a goal
close to the full time whistle.
Passage tried hard to equalise and deserved a draw but a free on full time
went inches wide.
Shauna Jordan, Erin Twomey, Gillian Foley & Laura McCarthy played well for
Passage.

Wednesday11th. This was a very competitive game and victory was not secured
until the final minutes. Late goals from Natasha O'Sullivan and Karen Twomey
ensured the points for Passage. St. Michaels fought hard and took the lead
mid way through the second half. Strong displays from the ever dependant
Erin Twomey, Sinead O'Reilly and Gemma Cooney started the Passage comeback.
Aisling Maxwell played well and delivered some fine passes to the Passage
forwards.
Natasha O'Sullivan once again was the danger forward for Passage notching up
3-1 over the hour. Karen Hughes scored a fine goal and had to cry off with a
nasty ankle injury. Claire O'Brien played very well in the forward line
alongside Amy Costello.

Keogh opened the scoring for Passage with a well taken point and the lads
never looked back. Passage led at half time 1.04 to no score. Nemo upped
their performance in the second half but thanks to some outstanding saves by
Gary Tett in goal pulling off two magnificent saves they only managed a

Passage off to winning start

BOTH Passage football teams have gotten their season off to winning starts.

The first team scored a great win over neighbours Carrigaline at the weekend to add to the second team's win over Rathpeacon the previous week.

It was the only game out of three that the club played on Sunday. The second team and the minors both had their games called off and even the game against Carrigaline had to be played on the nearby Passage school pitch because the club's main pitch was closed.

Despite the conditions the first team ran out winners on a score of

3-14 to 1-3 with David Horan, Jonathan Leonard and Brian Culloty all scoring goals. The team is now hoping to build on their good start and keep the victories coming.

The club also received a great boost with the confirmation that former Passage player and inter county manager Dave Keane has returned to his roots and is now coaching the hurling team with sights set clearly on bringing championship success to the club.

A hurling legend, Dave donned the green and white of Passage with great success and pride before work commitments sent him to Limerick, where he brought their Under 21 side to three successive All Ireland titles.

Passage West is delighted to have a manager of Dave's calibre working with the side again and we all wish him the best.

Training at all grades has been going very well and the club is always looking to hear from new members interested in playing hurling and football at all grades.

Dave's first game in action has yet to be announced but is expected to be around St Patrick's Weekend. The first Junior hurling team is joined in their section by Kinsale, Donoughmore, Valley Rovers, Ballinhassig, Nemo Rangers, Brian Dillons, Blackrock, Whitechurch 1, St Vincents and Na Piarsaigh.

Passage throw off the cobwebs

Following the winter break Passage West GAA club got back in to action
recently when the junior footballers returned to training.
Braving the elements, the footballers made full use of the club's
recently upgraded floodlit training pitch and began the gruelling
process of blowing away the cobwebs that may have gathered over
Christmas.
An excellent turnout by both regular members and some new faces
suggests that 2007 will be put the team back on winning ways.
The club's hurlers will also fall back into training shortly. Passage
GAA is also hoping to bring some changes to the city division's
hurling league. A proposal will be brought by the club before the city
division board calling for the league to revert back to three separate
leagues of approximately eight teams each based on how the teams
finished the 2006 season.
It is envisaged that the second and third placed teams from each
league would then play each other in a 'semi-final' before playing the
first placed team in a final.
There would then be a straight two up and two down promotion and
relegation system for the 2008 season.
The club feels the new system will give more teams the chance of
winning a competition and hopes it will be supported by other clubs.
Passage West is a rapidly growing town and the GAA club is eager to
hear from any new members that are interested in playing hurling or
football at any grade.
