HOWARD PENALTY EARNS PASSAGE REPLAY IN MINOR FINAL

Minor A Football Championship Final

Passage 2-7 St.Vincents 2-7

Last Saturday afternoon in Ballinlough Passage drew with St.Vincents in a very entertaining and close fought City Minor A Football Championship Final.

Passage started brightly and took the lead with a long range point from the excellent Johnny O'Byrne after 3 minutes. For the next 5 minutes Passage were well on top but failed to register any scores on the scoreboard. This all changed a minute later when Pa Coakley went on a soccer dribble that Ronaldo would have been proud of and finished the ball to the back of the net. A minute later he was through again but this time he put the ball inches wide. This miss was the wake up call Vincents were looking for and they finally got their opening score on the quarter of an hour mark. Passage responded immediately with an Eamon Fitzgerald point after a great passing movement. Passage were still dominating the exchanges but couldn't increase their lead due to some poor finishing. Vincents came alive in the closing minutes scoring 4 points with Passage only scoring one from a Shane Howard free which meant Passage after all their early dominance only led by a single point at the interval. The half time score was Passage 1-3 Vincents 0-5. As in the first half Passage started well and were unlucky not to have scored a second goal when Dave O'Connell hit the side netting. Moments later Shane Howard increased his sides lead to 2 points with a well taken free.

Vincents took the lead for the first time in the game a minute later scoring a soft goal after a mix up in the Passage defence. A great point from Cian Mc Carthy had Passage level in the games next attack. The next two attacks saw both sides getting a point a piece the Passage score coming from Johnny O'Byrne . The sides were now level coming into the closing ten minutes of the game but Vincents seemed to be getting the upper hand. They scored another soft goal after another mistake from the under pressure  Passage defence. It could have got a lot worse but for the brillance of Passage goalkeeper James Kind who made a sensational save and the Vincents shot that came back off the crossbar. Vincents scored another point to increase their lead to 4 points with 5 minutes left on the clock but Passage weren't finished. They had shown in the classic semi final that they refuse to give up and it was left to Shane Howard to again rescue the day. First he pointed a close in free and then he buried a penalty to give his side a deserved draw much to the delight of the  Passage supporters. Best for Passage on the day were Johnny O'Byrne, Shane Howard, Cian Mc Carthy, Daniel Hanlon and Ciaran Dunne.

Team: James Kind, Keith Deasy, Ciaran Dunne, Neil O'Brien, Daniel Hanlon, Cian Mc Carthy, Aidan O'Flaherty, Shane Howard, Dave O'Connell, Johnny O'Byrne, Michael Mullane, Eamon Fitzgerald, Eric Kenefick, Pa Coakley, Kieran Burke Subs Used: Eoghan O'Connor, Emmet Summers, Jimmy Lordan

Junior B Hurling Craobh Rua Final

Passage 1-9 Whitechurch 1-16

The Killer B's were beaten by an excellent Whitechurch side in the final of the Craobh Rua Cup last Sunday morning in Ballinlough. This was the second final that the lads have reached in 12 months  but with 4 players missing from the semi final the wait for silverware continues. Whitechurch hit the ground running at the start of the game and were 5 points up before Tom Harrington registered his sides first point from a 21 yard free. Passage were battling hard to stay with a Whitechurch side that wouldn't be out of place in the A grade. Passage  started a come back with 2 pointed frees from Tom Harrington and Willie Ashman but Whitechurch replied with two of their own. Tom "FAS" Farrell (who for once did his talking on the pitch) pointed a super point from his own half back line one of the best seen at this venue.

No doubt we will hear a lot more about it in the coming years. Whitechurch responded immediately scoring a great goal which gave Passage a huge task in the second half against the wind. The half time score was Passage 0-4 Whitechurch 1-7. In the second half Passage tried hard but Whitechurch matched them score for score. Tom Harrington scored the Passage goal and a few frees but he couldn't do it on his own and Whitechurch ran out comfortable winners in the end. The season ends on a disappointing note but the lads have done the club proud. Best for Passage were Tom Harrington, Alan Mc Carthy, Tom Farrell, Robbie Coughlan and Damien O'Byrne.

Team: Edward Ahern, Ralph Healy, Damien O'Byrne, Adrian Maxwell, Alan Mc Carthy, Robbie Coughlan, Willie Ashman jnr, Tom Farrell, Ronan Power, Dave O'Connell, Tom Harrington, Donal Enright, Willie Ashman snr, Dave Dorgan, Stephen Walsh Subs Used: Daniel Hanlon,Johnny O'Byrne, Stephen Deasy and Seamus O'Callaghan

Passage 5-5 Brian Dillons 0-6

Passage are still on course for the U-12 Hurling Championship/League double after a great victory over Brian Dillons last Saturday afternoon. The lads played great hurling to totally dominate the game and can now look forward to the final. Passage led by 2 points at the break the score being 2-2 to

0-6 points but upped a gear in the second half. They held Dillons scoreless and scored another 3-3 in a display which was as good as any under age Passage team in the last few years. Rory O'Hanlon was sensational scoring

1-1 and was undoubtly the man of the match. Others to shine in the white jersey were Peter Murphy, Jack Summers, Ross Mc Cauliffe, Shane Burke who scored 1-1 and Ryan Carroll who scored 2-3. The other Passage goal was scored by David Byrnes.

Team: Gary Tett, Niall O'Connor, Darragh Driscoll, Rory O'Reilly, Art Kelleher, Jack Summers, Ross Mc Cauliffe, Rory O'Hanlon, Sean Keogh, Shane Burke, Caleb Stokes, Daniel Santry, Peter Murphy, Ryan Carroll, David Byrnes Subs Used: Eoghan Fahy, Luke Delea and Ciaran Truwella

MINOR FOOTBALLERS WIN CLASSIC SEMI FINAL Semi Final Minor City Football Championship

Passage 4-12 Brian Dillons 1-20 aet

Passage beat Brian Dillons by a point in extra time in the semi final of the City Championship in a rain soaked Ballinlough last Sunday morning. Credit to both sides for making this game one of the most exciting and close fought football games played in City Headquarters this year. Passage struggled to get going in the first half and it looked like Dillons were going to cruise into the final such was their overall dominance in the first 25 minutes.

They led by 9 points coming up to the interval with Shane Howard the only scorer for Passage with a well taken free. Passage made a few positional switches and Cian Mc Carthy got his sides first point from play in the 28th minute. With time almost up Pa Coakley exploded into life scoring two great goals and unbelievably Passage were only two points down after being mostly out played for the majority of the half. You could see by the body language that Passage were now ready for battle in the second half. Passage attacked straight from the throw in and were quickly level with two points from Kieran Burke and Daniel Hanlon. Shane Howard fired over a 21 yard free to give Passage the lead for the first time in the game. Cian Mc Carthy kicked a great long range point to push Passage further ahead. Dillons regained their composure and kicked three unanswered points to regain the lead and set up a thrilling last 10 minutes. It was end to end at this stage and Passage scored a great goal after Dillons wasted a good scoring opportunity.

Shane Howard burst through from the middle of the park and released the ball to Michael Mullane who buried it to the back of the net. Pa Coakley increased the lead to three points with a well taken point and Passage looked like they were through to the final. Dillons had other ideas and came back at Passage to score two quick points. Young Corey Higgins punched the ball over the bar to give Passage a bit of breathing space coming into the closing minutes. Dillons weren't finished and they attacked in droves in the last minute. They were awarded two dubious frees which they pointed to send the game into extra time. The score was Passage 3-8 Dillons 0-17.  If normal time was close and exciting extra time was not for the faint hearted.

Passage drew first blood with two quick points from Shane Howard and Pa Coakley. Dillons replied immediately with a rocket of a goal from their outstanding corner forward. He kicked another point just before the ref blew his whistle to leave his side two points up. Passage were awarded a penalty at the start of the second period and the excellent Shane Howard was the coolest man in the ground as he slotted the ball to the back of the net.

Dillons as they did throughout the game came back again and with only a minute left on the clock led by a point. Shane Howard quickly levelled matters with a close in free and it looked like both sides would have to go head to head again next week which on the day would have been a fair result.

With time almost up Passage won a scrappy ball in midfield and Shane Howard was fouled heading for goal. He fired over the resulting free and the referee blew the whistle to the delight of the Passage players and supporters. Roll on the final next week. Players to play well on this great day were Shane Howard, Ciaran Dunne, Michael Mullane, Neil O'Brien, Cian Mc Carthy, James Kind and Pa Coakley.

Team: James Kind, Neil O'Brien, Ciaran Dunne, Keith Deasy, Jonathan Quinn, Cian Mc Carthy, Daniel Hanlon, Mick Mullane, Shane Howard, Eamon Fitzgerald, Pa Coakley, Johnny O'Byrne, Kieran Burke, Dave O'Connell, Eric Kenefick Subs Used; Corey Higgins, Emmet Summers, Darren Hanlon Manager; John Hanlon

MEDIA RELEASE

PASSAGE GAA CLUB LAUNCHES 120 YEAR HISTORY

Long time club member, administrator and former player, Matt Aherne has written an absorbing and enthralling history of his beloved Passage West GAA Club, one of the oldest affiliated clubs in the country. One year after the foundation of the GAA in Thurles in 1884, the club was founded in the home of first chairman, Ned Cadogan, coincidentally great grandfather of the author. With the assistance of some other dedicated club members, Matt has written the first 120 year history of any GAA club and the beautifully produced and finely illustrated, full colour hardback book is a testament to the many hours of toil and research which must have gone into a publication which will compare favourably with any GAA publication produced to date.

There are most interesting records of events which occurred in the last quarter of the 19th Century. There is an account of a local derby between Passage and neighbouring Monkstown played in 1876, eight years before the foundation of the GAA and nine years before the formation of the Passage GAA Club while there is a graphic report of the background to a famous county championship game played between Redmonds and Blackrock in Passage in 1896. This game attracted 15,000 spectators who came by train, wagonette and on foot and, such was the concern of the authorities that “a riot or tumult” would occur, that a bench order was obtained “solemnly admonishing all keepers of inns and public houses in Passage West, Monkstown, Rochestown and Carrigaline to close their doors from 10am to 10 pm” on the day in question. There is an intriguing profile of the town of Passage in 1885 when its importance can be measured by the fact that it boasted two hotels, five lodging houses, three churches, four schools, two bakers and eighteen public houses while the local dockyard provided employment for up to 300 people. In the early part of the year the town played host to one of Irish history’s most colourful personalities, Charles Stewart Parnell while, later that year, in the presence of 1600 guests in the dockyard, the Prince and Princess of Wales performed a keel laying ceremony for a new ship commissioned by the British government.

On the playing front, the Passage club contested the first ever Cork county senior hurling championship which was held in 1887. Although they remained unbeaten on the field of play, Passage are not recorded as county champions. The background is that a dispute occurred between semi-finalists Cork National and St. Finbarrs as Passage awaited the winners in the final. The upshot of a prolonged debate was that the title was awarded to Cork Nationals in 1888. Passage annexed their first county title in 1906 when their second team went on to win the seconds’ championship (now featured in the Cork County Board records as the junior county championship), defeating Redmonds in the final.

An amusing but insightful story into the relationship of GAA clubs and the police authorities (Royal Irish Constabulary) in the early days of the GAA is told in reference to a senior county championship match which Passage played against Castletownroche in Lisgoold on a Sunday in June 1900. To fulfil the fixture, the Passage team, accompanied by a group of supporters and led by a Fife and Drum Band, crossed the River Lee to Carrigaloe by rowing boat. From there they travelled in three wagonettes to Lisgoold. Having won the game and partaken of some refreshments in a local public house, the party set out for home. When they reached Carrigtwohill, a decision was made to stop for more refreshments. During the celebrations, a Passage player was arrested by the R.I.C. for singing seditious songs and he was quickly removed to the Carrigtwohill barracks. The situation worsened when the players and supporters went to the barracks and demanded the return of their player. The R.I.C. Sergeant refused the request and, after a discussion among the Passage contingent, it was decided to attack the barracks. The door was broken down and the crowd stormed in, “fighting forward with hurleys,” until they rescued their player. They re-formed in the street and, led by the band playing “The Peeler and the Goat”, they marched the mile out of Carrigtwohill and mounted the wagonettes to resume the homeward journey. However, the RIC were not quite finished with the Passage GAA Club. On the following Monday, a force led by the District Inspector, entered the town of Passage and searched the dockyard in an attempt to identify anyone involved in the previous night’s fracas. They had no success. Naturally, anyone involved in Carrigtwohill had made himself scarce and, at every meal hour for the duration of the week, the R.I.C. were on duty at the dock gates, some of them sporting black eyes. Anyone familiar with the working conditions of a dockyard appreciates the difficulty in identifying a man, seen in his Sunday best, as opposed to his work overalls, covered from head to foot in a mixture of coal dust, grease and rust. Having spent a week in Passage, the R.I.C. recognised the futility of their efforts and returned to base empty handed, much to the glee of the Passage team and followers.

The Passage club is typical of many hundreds of clubs up and down the country. Despite a number of forays into senior ranks in both hurling and football and winning many divisional titles at junior level, county titles proved most elusive. However, in addition to the junior hurling title of 1906, the club won intermediate hurling titles in 1924, 1930 and 1960, the junior football title in 1982 and the intermediate football title in 1983. Following the intermediate hurling success of 1960, Passage campaigned in senior ranks for the following fourteen years during which time they acquitted themselves admirably, losing out in the semi-final in 1966 to eventual winners, Avondhu. Likewise, the footballers were defeated in the semi-final of the 1984 senior county championship by star studded St. Finbarrs. However, these statistics hide the great contribution which the club has made to the wellbeing of the youth of the Passage parish over the past 120 years and the great senior inter county players produced, players such as Justin McCarthy, Eddie O’Brien, John Barry, Joe Murphy and John Horgan (the latter went on to spend most of his career with Blackrock). Passage also developed some fine under age players over the years and this aspect of the club’s activities received tangible recognition in 1968 when the Cork minor hurling team featured four players who had come up through the club’s under age ranks.

This fine book recounts many exciting hurling and football games in which Passage have participated at different levels over the past 120 years and it profiles some of the club’s key players and administrators. It charts the acquisition and development of the excellent playing facilities and amenities at Manning Park and it illustrates the vision and commitment of dedicated committee members in trying times in the 1950s as they strove to secure a permanent home for the club. There is an absorbing social commentary on the various periods covered in the book and the large collection of black and white and colour photographs is sure to arouse tremendous interest among readers. “120 Years of GAA in Passage” is a wonderful read which will appeal, not alone to natives of Passage and club members, but to the much wider GAA community.

The official book launch took place in the Passage GAA clubhouse on Wednesday, 2 August and was performed by Con Murphy, former President of the GAA in the presence of current President, Nickey Brennan.

Junior B Hurling League

Passage 1-10 Na Piarsaigh 2-6

Despite the shock of hearing that Legend Seamus”Skippy” O’Callaghan had announced his retirement the Killer B’s had a great win over Na Piarsaigh in a very close and exciting league game last Monday night in Manning Park. Passage started well with Robbie Coughlan opening the scoring from a 65 after 3 minutes. Passage were well on top but let Na Piarsaigh off the hook by wasting several easy scoring chances. Piarsaigh weathered the storm and scored a very soft goal after 10 minutes. The Northside team then started to dominate proceedings scoring 4 points without reply to give them a 6-point lead approaching half time. In the closing minute the youngest player on the pitch Johnny O’Byrne and comeback kid Stephen Walsh scored a point each to leave 4 points between the sides at the half time whistle. The second half belonged to Super Granddad Willie Ashman who reminded all the young pretenders that he still is the man by scoring 1-6. Straight from the throw in Ashy scored a long-range point to leave only a goal between the sides. Just like the first half Piarsaigh scored another goal after Passage had fired several scoring chances wide. Inspired by Ashy Passage refused to lie down and they slowly crept back into the game. Ashy scored 1-2 from frees and another from play to level the match with 10 minutes left on the clock. The sides then swapped points Ashy getting the Passage score from another well taken free. Hugh O’Neill then fired over what looked like the match winning point but Piarsaigh fought back and were soon level. The man of the moment then fired over the winning point right on the stroke of full time much to the delight of everyone present. The question now is would Passage have beaten Ballinure in the Championship if Ashy was playing this performance answers the question. At an age when some men would be fishing and golfing happily enjoying their retirement Willie continues to be one of the best players in the League Ashy we salute you.

The girls upped the tempo in the second half and ran out convincing winners in the end. Natasha O’Sullivan was the star of the show for Passage scoring 4-1. Kate Boland and Muireann Doyle completed the scoring with a goal apiece. Others to play well were Gemma Cooney, Erin Twomey, Shauna Jordan and Gillian Foley.
